a song that makes you sad: Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven (1992)

I still find this quite a difficult song to listen to. This song was written for his son who fell from the 53 story of a hotel his wife was staying at in New York. I really have to give a lot of credit to Clapton as he used his music as a medium to work through his grief. Even when you see him perform it there is a macabre about him whilst playing this song. Apparently, the day before the tragedy his son had wrote him a letter telling him he loves him which arrived in after they had buried their son. This song always played on my heart strings.

a movie that makes you sad: An American Tail (1986)

This whole movie is sad! The story is about a young Russian mouse gets separated from his family as they are moving to America. The son braves this new world trying to find them and it just seems that around every corner there is something stopping them from finding each other. The pass by each other, people who said they’d help him don’t. Ugh! At times in this movie you really feel like they will never find each other. Yeah there is a happy ending but for the most part this movie is pretty somber and that’s why its the movie that makes me sad.

a book that makes you sad: The Little Match Girl (1846)

I don’t know how far I’m stretching the rules with this one but I read it as a short story withing a book so I guess it kind of counts. This is just depressing as far as I’m concerned. If that was your aim Hans Christian Anderson then well done. You’ve accomplished what you set out for.

There was day #4. Going strong so far! Let’s hope my weekend habits don’t keep me from writing up the next 3 days! Dumb friends and their ability to deprive me of sleep.

A song that makes you happy:  Robert Randolph & the Family Band - Thrill of It (2006)

Man this song makes you smile right from the get go. If I’m ever having a bad day I just put this song on a few times and it helps me put things in perspective. It might hurt just a little bit while I’m trying to figure it out. I’m on this ride for the thrill of it. Living the dream is what life’s all about. You can’t put it better than that. What a positive spin! Robert Randolph emotions really come across very clearly in all of his songs, this one specially. I just love this song so much!

A movie that makes you happy: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
It always made me happy watching this movie. The wonder and excitement. You never knew what was going to happen next. Anything was possible in the world of Wonka. Haha, the whole movie was sort of like a Japanese game show. Your ignorance was punished with extreme prejudice. I don’t think they could have cast a better actor for Wonka than Gene Wilder. He has that half-genius, half-kid, half-devil, half-saint thing going on. It really makes for such a wonderful movie. A must have in every DVD collection as far as I’m concerned. Try and watch this movie and walk away without a smile on your face.

A book that makes you happy: Douglas Adams - The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (1979)

The reason this book makes me happy was that it was the first book I can remember finishing by myself. I’m not counting all the books I was made to read in high school and what not. This was the first book I picked up and actually thought “Let me give this reading thing a go” Best idea I have ever had. Had me in stitches from the first page till the very last and it left me with an awesome feeling…. or maybe its just Pink Floyd influencing me again?? Damn you Gilmour! I could read this book over and over and still would laugh at it. Fantastic job Mr. Adams you died much too soon. Science has lost a friend, literature has lost a luminary, the mountain gorilla and the black rhino have lost a gallant defender - Richard Dawkins.

The 30 Day Challenge: Day #2

Ugh, it started off all well and good asking me for my favourites and that was a lot of fun but now… At this very moment I feel like rapidly introducing my head to my wall for a few hours because I willfully went and looked for my least favourite book movie and song. Believe me that its enough to do someones head in several times over.

your least favorite song: Crazy Frog - Axel F (2005)

I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE this song. Ugh, it destroyed what was a pretty cool song. It even says it in the music video “The Most Annoying Thing In The World!”. They aknowledge that it actually is putrid garbage. How this song went to no.1 in 7 different countries is well beyond my level of understanding. Kill it with fire and urinate on the ashes is the only thing to do I guess. Crazy Frog you will always be remembered as the worst of the worst.

your least favorite movie: The Room (2003)

I have NEVER found a movie that was sooooo bad that it was funny but it just so happens that there exists such a movie. Seriously, go and watch this movie. You will laugh your arse off. Its a tale of a sordid love triangle between a man, his wife and his best friend. The reason it is hilarious is that it tries to take itself so seriously. Tommy Wiseau… an accidental genius. I won’t write much else other than suffice to say that you should head over to Thatguywiththeglasses and watch his review for the movie if it is still up. You’ll thank me for this after.

your least favorite book: Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone (1997)

Hmm… It’s kind of hard for me to write about my least favourite book because I don’t really have one. I do read quite a bit but I tend to read the classics mostly or otherwise books recommended from people with similar interests to my own. So I don’t really have a book that I really dislike. But if there was one that I had to choose I guess it probably would be Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. I never understood what the hype was about it. The story was alright, the characters were a little bland and it was written for people younger that what the age bracket for this book should have been. I haven’t read the whole series nor have I watched the movies and just to shoot down ahead of time all the people who say it get’s better as it progresses, you should have got it right the first time. Captivate me at the beginning and then I’ll read more. But to be fair I gave it a chance. Just Average.

Well anyway there is day #2 done (Probably the most difficult) and here I can stop with the hating and get back to more interesting stuff. Stay safe and have a good day.

The 30 Day Challenge: Day #1

Well I thought that it might be time for a post. To be perfectly honest I haven’t felt very inspired to write anything within the last few weeks. There have been quite a few noteworthy thing that have been going on but it just didn’t feel right. So lets turn that around with what I hope to be a good series of entries.

I happened to be wandering around and happened and stumbled across a ‘30 day challenge’. It looks good and I wouldn’t mind taking the challenge. I think it can be quite a good insight at some of my personal favourite movies, books and songs. Well the challenge called for songs only…. but lets just make it into all 3. So I guess that first thing is first and I’ll post the list in its entirety.

day 30 - your favorite song at this time last year

Let’s jump into it:

Your favourite song: Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

Damn, now this is a hard question. My favourite song of all time? C’mon bro can you pick out 1 snowflake in a blizzard? Well if I had to narrow it down to one I guess it would be Comfortably Numb. This was the first song that I ever taught myself to play on guitar so it holds a special place for me. I really lose myself in this song. No matter where I am it demands me to pay attention, even for just a moment. The final solo is just superb and Dave Gilmour has a level of mastery that you just don’t find with guitar music now days I find (I tend to be VERY biased in this area). Now for the blemish that would otherwise have been a spotless. WHY did you put Bob Geldof as Pink!?

Your favourite movie: For a few dollars more (1965)

Now this was a rather difficult toss up. I was teetering between this movie and 12 Angry Men. The answer is ‘For a few dollars more’ the 1965 spaghetti western starring Clint Eastwood. The second of the Dollars series and what I consider to be the superior of the trilogy. I love this film. Just everything about it draws me in. The cinematography, the music, the characters, their interaction. I think Ennio Moricone writing the score is what took me in originally. He puts such raw emotion and has a overwhelming command over music that he can write fantastic pieces that just seem to capture perfectly whatever he wants. Also, I think the dark humor that Leone has keeps you on your toes in this movie. Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Gian Maria Volonté seem to just fall into their roles in this movie and it seems like they are having fun playing these characters. Oh and the crowning glory before I forget. This movie has the greatest final scene ever! Definatley a must see for spaghetti western or Clint Eastwood fans.

Your favourite book: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - The Hound of the Baskervilles

Without a doubt it would have to be my favourite novel of all time. I adore the Sherlock Holmes series. If there was anybody that I would want to emulate it would be Sherlock Holmes himself. He’s got such a sharp mind and quick wit. The character was such a good amalgamation of the mind and matter working together. The reason I liked this book so much is because not only was it the first Conan Doyle book that I read but also that this title had the best mix of the extraordinary versus the deduction. I found that it really had the most ‘What the hell is going to happen next’ feeling associated with it and for those reasons I’m awarding it my faourite novel of all time.

Well there we go that was Day#1. Here’s coming for Day #2. Stay safe and have a good day people.
